More publisher weirdness today. It turns out that the American Chemical Society as an easter egg of hell in their HTML of Open Access papers: a hyperlink (things you are expected to follow), but hidden for the naked eye, that leads you to a bot that will tag you for illegal activity. Your IP gets blocked, though there is rumors that your whole university can get blocked. I certainly got an email from our ICTS department. So, don’t follow the above link visible in the screenshot!
Mind you, this is probably all according to the agreement the ACS has with our university library, and I was foolish to see if the ACS really thought this was a smart thing.
But apparently we also cannot spider Open Access literature that some funder payed good bucks for.
PS. I still plan to make the CDK I in JCIM paper Open Access! ACS will surely fix this glitch.
